Before the Noise, the Word

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Today’s Devotional

Five minutes before your alarm goes off, the house holds a different kind of silence. The refrigerator hums. The street is still. Your thoughts have not yet organized themselves into tasks, worries, obligations. For a few seconds, you exist in the gap between sleep and responsibility, and everything is simple.

John opens his Gospel at a moment like that, except the scale is infinite. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Before law, before temple, before prophecy, before the first human syllable, the Word already existed. John does not say the Word arrived. He says the Word was. Already present, already with God, already God. The verb is quiet and immovable.

I think about what that means for the noise. Every opinion, every argument, every voice competing for attention, every contradiction that leaves you unsure what to believe: all of it came after. The Word was there first. And “first” here does not mean early. It means foundational. The ground beneath every other sound. When everything else feels like static, John points to something that predates the static entirely. The Word holds its place, steady as the silence before your day begins, except this silence speaks, and what it speaks is God himself.

Time to reflect

Spend a few quiet minutes with these before the next demand reaches you.

  • What voices have been loudest in your life this week, and how many of them left you more confused than when you started listening?
  • When you strip away every opinion you have absorbed from others, what do you actually believe about who God is?
  • Where in your daily routine do you experience the kind of stillness that lets you hear something older than the noise?
  • Is there a question you keep asking that might already have its answer in something you have known for a long time but stopped paying attention to?

Prayer Of The Day

God, we come to you with full heads and tired ears. We have listened to so many voices that we have trouble recognizing yours. We confess that we sometimes treat your Word as one opinion among many, something to weigh against the rest, when it was here before any of the rest existed. Teach us to return to what came first. Quiet the impulse in us that ranks every voice equally and help us hear the one that was speaking before we learned to listen. We do not need more information. We need the Word that was with you and was you, and we need it to be louder than our confusion today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

The Word existed before the noise; here is how to let it through today.

  1. Read John 1:1-14 slowly, out loud, once this morning. Let the repetition of “the Word” land each time without rushing past it.
  2. Pick one hour today and turn off every input: phone on silent, no music, no podcasts, no background television. Stay in that quiet and notice what rises to the surface of your thinking.
  3. Write down the single belief about God that you held as a child and still hold now, unchanged by everything that has happened since.
  4. Find someone you trust and ask them a simple question: “What is one thing about God you have never doubted?” Listen without commenting.
  5. Walk somewhere familiar, a route you take often, and pay attention to one detail you have never noticed: a tree, a sound, a color. Let the act of seeing something old with new eyes mirror what John is doing with the word “beginning.”
  6. Open the book of Psalms to any chapter and read until one line stops you. Copy that line onto a piece of paper and set it where you will see it tomorrow morning.

Today Wisdom

Every voice you have ever heard entered a room the Word had already built. The foundation does not compete with the furniture placed on top of it. It holds. Quietly, completely, from before the first sound to after the last one fades. What was first remains first.
