The Courage to Be Seen

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

A man checks the locks on every door twice before bed. He has spent years making sure nothing gets out. No weakness visible to the neighbors. No crack in the voice during a work call. No moment at the dinner table where someone might look at him and see that he is tired in a way sleep cannot fix.

He has built something impressive, this man. A reputation for steadiness. A life that looks, from every available angle, like it was assembled by someone who knows what he is doing. And the strangest part is that he does know what he is doing. He is competent, and capable, and genuinely good at many of the things he has taken on. The strength is real. And it has become the only version of himself he allows anyone to see.

Proverbs 16:18 is usually read as a warning aimed at the arrogant, the loud, the obviously inflated. But the verse is quieter than that. A haughty spirit can also be a man who thinks he cannot afford to let anyone see what is underneath. Pride, in its most invisible form, is the decision that you must hold everything alone, that asking for help would be a kind of collapse, that the walls you have built around yourself are load-bearing when they are actually just walls. The fall the proverb describes does not always happen in public. Sometimes it happens in a living room, on a Tuesday, when the person who has been holding everything together sits down and realizes they cannot stand back up, not because they lack strength, but because they never let anyone share the weight.

Time to reflect

Sit with these questions honestly, even the ones that sting:

  • Where in your life are you performing strength instead of actually feeling it?
  • Is there one person you trust enough to say “I am not fine” to, and have you said it recently?
  • What would you lose if people saw you as someone who needed help? Is what you would lose real, or is it a story you have been telling yourself?
  • When was the last time someone offered to carry something for you, and you let them?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, I have been so busy holding things together that I forgot you never asked me to do it alone. I have confused self-reliance with faithfulness, and somewhere along the way I started believing that needing help meant failing. Forgive me for the pride I dressed up as responsibility. Teach me that the bravest thing I can do today is not to be stronger, but to be honest about where I am weak. Give me one moment of real openness with someone I trust, and help me believe that the structure will not collapse if I stop gripping it so tightly. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

Here are concrete ways to practice vulnerability and honest strength today:

  1. Send a message to one person you trust and tell them something real about how you are doing right now, not the polished version.
  2. Read 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, where Paul writes about strength made perfect in weakness, and sit with it for five minutes without trying to explain it away.
  3. Identify one task or responsibility you have been carrying alone and ask someone specific to help you with it before the day ends.
  4. Write down, on paper, the three things you are most afraid people will think about you if they see you struggling. Read them back. Notice how much power they lose when they are written in your own handwriting.
  5. At the end of the day, pray with your hands open instead of clasped. Let the posture remind your body of what your mind already knows: you were not built to hold everything.

Today Wisdom

The strongest walls are not the ones that keep everything out. They are the ones with a door. Strength that cannot bend will eventually break, and the version of yourself that you let no one see is the version that most needs to be seen.
