Before You Had the Words

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

How many conversations have you rehearsed in your head, trying to find the right words to make someone finally understand who you are? The sentence you keep revising. The explanation you keep shortening because the full version never seems to land.

Most of us carry a quiet exhaustion from that effort. We learn to translate ourselves for different rooms, different people, different seasons of life. We trim pieces that seem too complicated to explain. The version that gets the fewest questions becomes the one we lead with. And somewhere underneath all that editing, the original version of who we are waits, unspoken, wondering if anyone will ever read the whole thing without needing a summary first. God spoke to Jeremiah before Jeremiah had language, before he had a reputation or a list of accomplishments to hand over as proof. “I knew you” lands differently when you hear it from someone who did not need you to explain yourself first. The knowing came before the forming, before the setting apart, before any of it. God’s knowledge of Jeremiah was not a response to anything Jeremiah did or said. It was the starting point.

That is what this verse holds for anyone who is tired of being partially understood. The one who made you did not need the rehearsed version. He started with the whole one.

Time to reflect

Take a moment with these before they pass through you too quickly.

  • What part of yourself have you trimmed or hidden because it felt too difficult to explain?
  • When was the last time you felt fully known by someone without having to work for it?
  • Is there a version of yourself you have stopped offering to people because it was misunderstood too many times?
  • What would change in your daily life if you believed, all the way down, that God’s knowledge of you came before your ability to present yourself?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, we have spent so many years learning how to explain ourselves to the people around us. We have practiced being smaller, simpler, easier to understand. And somewhere in that practice, we started to believe that the edited version was the real one. Forgive us for that. Remind us that your knowledge of who we are did not begin when we found the words for it. You knew us before we could speak, before we had a single thing to show for ourselves. Help us rest in that today. Help us stop performing for an audience of one who never needed the performance. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

Knowing you are known changes what you do with your hands today.

  1. Read Psalm 139:1-6 slowly, out loud if you can. Let the repetition of “you know” settle into the places where you have felt unknown.
  2. Identify one relationship where you have been translating yourself into a simpler version. Send that person a message today that sounds more like the full version of you, even if it feels risky.
  3. Write down three things about yourself that you rarely share because they are hard to explain. Do not explain them. Just let them exist on the page.
  4. Find a quiet five minutes this afternoon and sit without preparing anything. No agenda, no request list for God. Just presence, the way you would sit with someone who already knows your whole story.
  5. Choose one responsibility today and approach it as something you were specifically prepared for, even if you cannot see how yet. Do the work as someone set apart for it.

Today Wisdom

“Knew” is the first verb in Jeremiah’s calling. Before the forming, before the setting apart, before the appointing. God’s first action toward you was recognition. Every purpose he gives you grows from a knowing that was already complete before you drew your first breath.
