Today’s Devotional
Most people can remember a time they walked into a room and were not sure they belonged. A new job, a new school, a gathering where everyone already seemed to know each other. You stand near the door. You wait for someone to notice you, to confirm that your being there is not a mistake.
That feeling follows some of us into faith. We read the promises, we hear about God’s love, and somewhere underneath the hearing there is a quiet question: but does he mean me, specifically? Paul’s letter to the Ephesians answers that question before it finishes being asked. “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.” The word that stops me here is “plan.” A plan exists before the thing it describes, built in advance, shaped with intent. The room was built with you in mind.
I think the reason this verse is hard for some people to receive is that it asks them to believe they were wanted before they had done anything worth wanting. Before the resume, before the track record, before the proof. Chosen is the starting position. You were claimed before you ever stood near the door wondering if you should walk in.
Time to reflect
Let these questions meet you where you actually are today:
- When was the last time you felt like you had to earn your place somewhere, and what did that cost you?
- If you believed, fully believed, that God planned your presence in his story before you were born, what would change about the way you talk to yourself this week?
- Where in your life are you still waiting for permission that has already been given?
- What would it look like to stop auditioning and simply take the seat?
Prayer Of The Day
Father, we confess that we often live as though we are still waiting for your invitation, even though you sent it before we drew our first breath. We perform, we strive, we measure ourselves against standards you never set for us. Teach us to rest in the strange and specific truth that you chose us on purpose, with purpose, according to a plan that did not need our permission or our qualifications. Help us stop standing near the door. Give us the courage to sit down and belong. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Strengthening Faith
Because identity begins with what God planned, not what you prove, try these today:
- Write down the words “chosen,” “planned,” and “claimed” on a piece of paper and place it where you will see it three times today.
- Read Psalm 139:13-16, which describes God’s involvement before birth, and notice which phrase feels most personal to you.
- Identify one area of your life where you have been performing for approval instead of resting in what is already true, and name it out loud.
- Tell someone you trust, in person or by message, one specific thing about them that makes your life better, so they hear they belong.
- Before bed, sit quietly for two minutes and say this to God: “You chose me before I chose you. That is enough.”
Today Wisdom
A seed does not apply to become a tree. It already carries the blueprint inside it, placed there before the soil, before the rain, before a single root pushed downward. Your place in the story was written into you the same way.
