Greater Things Than These

“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

Today’s Devotional

Someone you know has been rehearsing the same sentence for years. The words change slightly each time, but the meaning stays fixed: I am not the kind of person God uses for anything significant. Maybe you know that person because you see them in the mirror.

It is worth sitting with what Jesus actually said here, because the room where he said it matters. This was the last supper. Hours from betrayal. The men around that table were not scholars or priests. They were fishermen, a tax collector, ordinary workers who had spent three years watching Jesus heal the sick, feed crowds, and speak with an authority that made religious experts nervous. And in that room, at that table, facing his own death, Jesus looked at these specific, unremarkable men and told them they would do greater things than he had done.

He did not say it to future theologians. He did not reserve it for people who had earned the right to hear it. He said it to people who would, within hours, run away from him. Peter would deny knowing him before sunrise. And still, Jesus said “greater things.” He said it knowing exactly who he was talking to, knowing their failures before they did, and meaning every word.

Time to reflect

Let this verse press against the places where you have been shrinking. Ask yourself honestly:

  • What is the sentence you repeat to yourself about why God could not use you, and when did you first start believing it?
  • When was the last time you held back from something you felt called to do because you decided in advance that you were not enough?
  • If Jesus spoke John 14:12 directly to the disciples knowing they would fail him that very night, what does that tell you about the prerequisites he requires?
  • Is there a specific area of your life where you have been waiting to feel qualified before you step forward?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, I have spent more time than I want to admit convincing myself that I am too small, too flawed, too ordinary for you to work through. I have looked at the people around me and decided that they were the ones you meant when you spoke about greater things. Forgive me for editing myself out of a promise you made with your eyes wide open. You knew who was sitting at that table. You knew what they would do wrong. And you still said it. Help me stop shrinking back from the life you are calling me into. Give me the faith to believe that “whoever” includes me. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

The distance between believing Jesus meant what he said and living like it is shorter than you think. Today, take one step across that distance:

  1. Write down the specific sentence you tell yourself about why God could not use you. Read it back. Then write underneath it: “whoever believes in me will do even greater things.”
  2. Identify one thing you have been putting off because you felt unqualified, and take the smallest possible step toward it before the day ends.
  3. Tell one person today, honestly, about something you feel called to do but have been afraid to pursue. Say it out loud to someone who will listen without dismissing it.
  4. Read Ephesians 2:10 and sit with the phrase “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Notice that the works were prepared before you were.
  5. Before bed tonight, name one moment from the day where you showed up instead of shrinking back, even in a small way.

Today Wisdom

Empowerment is what happens when you stop waiting for permission you were given a long time ago, at a table, by someone who already knew your name and your worst day and still said “greater.”
