The Knock You Keep Explaining Away

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

Picture the last time you heard a sound in your house and immediately started looking for the source. A rattle in the pipes. A branch scraping the window. Your first thought was mechanical: what needs fixing. Your second thought was practical: who do I call. At no point did you consider that the sound might be someone waiting for you.

We do this with God more often than we realize. Revelation 3:20 places Jesus at the door, knocking. The verse is so familiar that we hear it as theology, as metaphor, as a concept about salvation. But read it again slowly. He says, “Here I am.” Before the invitation, before the knocking, before any mention of a door, he announces his presence. He is already there. The knocking is the continuation of a presence that preceded your awareness of it. And the promise at the end is a meal. He wants to sit down with you. The God of the universe describes what he wants from you, and it sounds like dinner with a friend.

If you have spent any season feeling unseen, feeling like the person who shows up and gets looked past, this verse is telling you that someone has been trying to reach you, and that his patience has outlasted every explanation you invented for the sound at the door.

Time to reflect

These questions ask you to look at what you have been dismissing. Take your time with each one.

  • When was the last time you felt a pull toward God that you explained away as mood, coincidence, or wishful thinking?
  • Who in your life keeps showing up for you in ways you have minimized or failed to name?
  • If God’s primary desire were simply to be with you, not to fix you, how would that change the way you pray today?
  • What door in your life have you kept closed, not because you locked it, but because you forgot it was there?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, I have heard you knocking and called it something else. I have explained away your presence because I was too tired to believe it could be real, or too bruised to believe it was for me. I confess that I have looked for you in large signs when you were standing at the nearest door. Teach me to stop diagnosing every sound and simply answer. I want to sit with you. I want the kind of closeness that feels like a meal shared without hurry, where nothing needs to be solved and no one needs to perform. Meet me where I have stopped expecting to be met. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

The meal Jesus describes requires one thing from you: an open door. These steps move you toward opening it.

  1. Read Luke 15:1-7 today, the parable of the lost sheep. Notice who does the searching and who does the finding. Let that reframe how you understand effort in your relationship with God.
  2. Identify one recurring nudge you have felt this week, something you brushed aside as random or unimportant. Write it on a piece of paper and place it where you will see it tomorrow morning.
  3. At your next meal today, leave one chair empty for thirty seconds before you sit down. Let the pause remind you of the invitation in this verse: he wants to eat with you.
  4. Send a voice message, not a text, to someone who has been consistent in your life. Tell them one specific thing they have done that you noticed but never acknowledged.
  5. Sometime this afternoon, sit in silence for three minutes with no phone, no book, no task. Do not pray with words. Just be present in the room and let the quiet be enough.

Today Wisdom

The word in this verse that earns the most weight is “eat.” Save, redeem, transform: none of them. The God who spoke galaxies into light describes his deepest hope for you in the language of bread broken and a table shared. Presence has always been the point.
