The True Shepherd and the Sheep

Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

Today’s Devotional

In John 10:1, Jesus uses the analogy of a shepherd and his sheep to teach us about our relationship with Him. The imagery of a shepherd caring for his sheep was a familiar one in biblical times and provides a powerful illustration of how Jesus cares for and protects us. The sheep pen represents a place of safety and security, while the gate symbolizes Jesus, who is the only legitimate and rightful way to enter into that secure place.

This verse also highlights the danger posed by those who seek to deceive and lead people astray by presenting themselves as spiritual leaders or teachers but are not genuinely sent by God. These individuals are likened to thieves and robbers who climb over the wall to enter the sheep pen instead of using the gate. Their motives are selfish and destructive, and they ultimately seek to exploit the sheep for their own gain.

Time to reflect

Reflecting on John 10:1, we can apply the teachings of this verse in our lives in the following ways:

  • Recognize Jesus as the true Shepherd and the only way to salvation, and continually seek a deeper relationship with Him.
  • Be cautious of those who claim to have spiritual authority but do not truly follow Jesus or submit to His authority.
  • Maintain a strong foundation in God’s Word, which will provide discernment and protection from false teachings and deceptive leaders.
  • Trust in Jesus as our Shepherd, knowing that He cares for us and provides a place of safety and security in our lives.
  • Encourage and support one another in our faith, helping each other stay accountable and focused on the true Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Prayer Of The Day

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the precious gift of Jesus, our true Shepherd. Help us to always recognize Him as the only way to salvation and to grow in our relationship with Him. Grant us discernment to recognize false teachers and deceptive leaders who seek to lead us astray. We pray for Your protection from all those who wish to harm us spiritually.

Lord, strengthen our foundation in Your Word, that we may be grounded in Your truth and not easily swayed by false teachings. Help us to trust in You as our Shepherd, knowing that You provide us with safety and security. May we encourage and support one another in our faith, keeping our focus on You, the one true Shepherd.

Strengthening Faith

In light of John 10:1, let us take these steps to honor God and grow in our relationship with Jesus:

  • Spend time daily in prayer and reading God’s Word to deepen our relationship with Jesus and grow in our understanding of His truth.
  • Be vigilant in discerning the teachings and leaders we follow, ensuring they align with the teachings of Jesus and the truth of Scripture.
  • Share our faith with others and encourage them to follow Jesus as the true Shepherd, who alone provides safety, security, and salvation.
