When Healing Looks Like Running

“But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.”
Malachi 4:2 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

Warm air against the back of your neck, the kind that loosens muscles you forgot were tight. That first wave of heat after a long, bitter season, when your shoulders drop half an inch and your body remembers it was built for something other than bracing.

Malachi paints a picture that sounds almost reckless. God’s people, after exile and silence and centuries of holding their breath, will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. The word in Hebrew is closer to “leap” or “skip,” the way young cattle do when the barn door swings open in early spring. They do not walk out cautiously. They do not test the ground. They run because their legs were made for open fields, and the light tells them the waiting is finished.

I think about the reader who has grown used to wincing. The one who wakes up and checks the horizon for the next hard thing before their feet hit the floor. Malachi is speaking to that person. The sun of righteousness rising is a promise aimed at people whose muscles are knotted from bracing. And the promise goes further than relief. God’s design after the long night is a joy so physical, so full-bodied, that the best image the prophet can find for it is a young animal running simply because running feels good.

Time to reflect

The verse describes a transition from endurance to delight. Sit with that threshold for a moment.

  • Where in your life have you been bracing for the next hard thing, even though no specific threat is in front of you right now?
  • If you picture yourself as one of those calves at the barn door, what is the open field you are afraid to run into?
  • When was the last time joy caught you off guard, and what did you do with it: receive it, or hold it at arm’s length?
  • What would change in the next week if you believed that God’s intention for you is not just recovery but delight?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, we confess that we have been bracing. Some of us for so long that we have forgotten what it feels like to stand upright without watching for the next blow. We have treated survival as the best we could hope for, and we have mistaken endurance for faithfulness. Forgive us for shrinking your promises down to what feels safe. Teach us to trust that when you say healing, you mean a healing so complete it ends in laughter. Give us the courage to step into the open, not cautiously, but the way your prophet described: freely, fully, the way a young animal runs when the door finally opens. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

The shift from bracing to freedom starts with small, deliberate choices today.

  1. Read Psalm 30:11-12, where mourning turns to dancing, and write one line about what your own version of that turning point might look like.
  2. Identify one area of your life where you are still wincing in anticipation. Name it out loud, then say: “This is not the whole story.”
  3. Step outside for five minutes this afternoon with no phone and no task. Stand in whatever light is available and let your body feel warmth, wind, or open air without analyzing it.
  4. Cook or prepare a meal you genuinely enjoy today, not the efficient option, the one that tastes like celebration.
  5. Tell someone, face to face or by voice, about one good thing that happened this week. Let yourself sound glad about it.
  6. Before you sleep, instead of reviewing what went wrong, name three moments from the day where nothing was hurting. Let those be the last thought.

Today Wisdom

A bird released from a cage does not fly in careful circles. It climbs. The healing God promises is not a slow return to normal. It is the moment your wings remember what they were built for, and the sky has been waiting.
