A New Command: Love One Another

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

Today’s Devotional

In John 13:34, Jesus presents His disciples with a new commandment: to love one another just as He has loved them. This instruction comes during the Last Supper, shortly before Jesus’ crucifixion. By emphasizing the importance of love, Jesus is preparing His followers for the challenges they will face after His death and resurrection.

Jesus sets a high standard for love in this verse, asking us to love others with the same depth and selflessness as He has shown us. His love was sacrificial, unconditional, and transformative. The love we are called to extend to one another should mirror these qualities, reflecting the love of Christ in our relationships.

Time to reflect

As you consider John 13:34, reflect on these questions:

  • How can you follow Jesus’ command to love others as He has loved you?
  • In what ways can you demonstrate sacrificial, unconditional, and transformative love in your relationships?
  • How does loving others with the love of Christ strengthen your faith and spiritual growth?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us the ultimate example of love through Your life, death, and resurrection. Help us to follow Your command to love one another as You have loved us. Fill our hearts with Your love, so that we may extend it to those around us with sincerity, humility, and compassion.

Teach us to love sacrificially, unconditionally, and in a way that transforms lives. Enable us to be vessels of Your love in our families, friendships, and communities. In Your precious name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

  1. Reflect on specific ways you can demonstrate Christ-like love to those around you, and take action to show this love in tangible ways.
  2. Identify any relationships in which you struggle to show love, and ask God for guidance and strength to love as He has loved you.
  3. Consider joining a small group or Bible study to foster deeper connections with other believers and practice the command to love one another.

Today Wisdom

Jesus’ command in John 13:34 challenges us to love others with the same selfless, sacrificial love He demonstrated throughout His life. As we strive to follow this command, we can grow in our relationship with Christ and witness the transformative power of His love in our own lives and the lives of those around us.
