Fitted Before You Were Ready

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

The resume sits open on the screen, and every line feels borrowed. Skills that sound impressive in someone else’s mouth. Experience that, held up to the light, seems thinner than it should be. Meanwhile, the person in the next room, the next office, the next pew, always seems to arrive already equipped, already certain of what they bring. Two people looking at the same kind of work, and one of them wondering how they got into the room at all.

Paul writes to the Ephesians with a word that rearranges the entire question. “We are God’s handiwork,” he says, “created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” The weight of that phrase falls on “prepared in advance.” The work was fitted to you before you ever measured yourself against it. God did not design a role and then hope someone adequate would wander past. He shaped the work with your hands already in mind. The fit was settled before the worry began, before the comparison, before the long inventory of everything you think you lack. You were the reason the task exists in that specific shape.

Time to reflect

Hold that phrase, “prepared in advance,” and test it against what you actually believe about yourself:

  • Where in your life right now are you waiting to feel qualified before you act, and what would change if the qualification was never yours to earn?
  • When you compare yourself to someone who seems more capable, what specific ability do you believe God forgot to give you?
  • Is there a task you keep circling without starting because you are convinced it needs a different person?
  • What would it mean for your next decision if the fit between you and your work was already settled?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, I confess that I have spent more time measuring what I lack than trusting what you placed in me. I have looked at the work ahead and assumed it needed someone steadier, sharper, more prepared. I have treated my limitations as proof that I wandered into the wrong room. Teach me to believe that you are a precise God, that you do not waste material, that the shape of my days and the shape of my abilities were drawn on the same page. Give me the courage to begin the thing I have been circling. Help me to stop auditioning for a role you already cast me in. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

The distance between feeling inadequate and stepping forward is shorter than it seems. These steps close it:

  1. Read Psalm 139:13-16 slowly, once for understanding and once as if God is describing you specifically, and underline the verb that surprises you most.
  2. Identify one task you have been postponing because you feel underqualified, and complete the smallest possible first step before the day ends.
  3. Ask someone who knows you well to name one ability they see in you that you tend to overlook; listen without correcting them.
  4. Write the words “prepared in advance” on a card or a note on your phone, and place it where you will see it during your most uncertain hour of the day.
  5. At lunch, sit without your phone for five minutes and name, silently, three things your hands have done this week that helped someone, however small.
  6. Pick one routine responsibility you resent or feel overqualified for, and do it today as though it were designed with your name on it.

Today Wisdom

“Prepared in advance” means the blueprint preceded the doubt. Every morning you wake up wondering whether you are enough, the work God assigned already carries the dimensions of your exact hands. Readiness is not a feeling you achieve. It is a fact you walk into.
