In Matthew 3:13, we read about Jesus coming to John the Baptist to be baptized. This event marks the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and serves as a powerful example of humility and obedience to the will of God. Jesus, being fully divine and without sin, did not need to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins like others. However, He chose to be baptized as a sign of His identification with humanity and as an act of submission to God’s plan.
John the Baptist, who had been preaching about the coming Messiah and baptizing people in the Jordan River as a symbol of repentance, recognized the significance of Jesus’ request. He initially hesitated to baptize Jesus, stating that he was not worthy to do so. However, Jesus insisted, and John ultimately complied.
The baptism of Jesus not only demonstrated His humility and obedience but also served as a public declaration of His identity as the Son of God. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove, while a voice from heaven declared, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).
