The Ascension and the Coming Kingdom

So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

Today’s Devotional

In this verse, we find the disciples gathered together with Jesus after His resurrection, asking Him about the restoration of the kingdom to Israel. This question shows that they were still trying to understand the full scope of Jesus’ mission and the nature of His kingdom.

Jesus’ response to their question, found in verses 7-8, indicates that the timing and nature of the kingdom were not for them to know. Instead, He focuses on the role they would play as His witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share the good news of His life, death, and resurrection to the ends of the earth.

Time to reflect

As we reflect on Acts 1:6, let’s consider the following points on how to apply the teachings of this verse in our personal lives:

  • Recognize that our understanding of God’s plans and purposes may be limited. We may not always know the timing or the details of His plans, but we can trust that He is in control and working everything out for His glory and our good.
  • Be open to the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. As Jesus’ followers, we are called to be His witnesses in the world, sharing the good news of His love and salvation with others. To do this effectively, we need the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Focus on our mission as witnesses for Christ, rather than getting caught up in speculation about future events or the specifics of God’s plans. Our primary responsibility is to share the gospel message and make disciples of all nations, trusting that God’s kingdom will be established in His perfect timing.

Prayer Of The Day

Lord Jesus, thank You for the reminder in Acts 1:6 that Your kingdom is not bound by our expectations or understanding. Help us to trust in Your perfect plans and timing, even when they may be unclear to us. Empower us by Your Holy Spirit to be effective witnesses for You, sharing the good news of Your love and salvation with those around us. In Your name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

In light of Acts 1:6, let us take these steps to trust in God’s plans and timing and to focus on our mission as witnesses for Christ:

  1. Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s kingdom and His plans, as well as for the humility to recognize that our understanding may be limited.
  2. Seek the guidance and empowerment of the Holy Spirit in your daily life, asking God to use you as an effective witness for Him.
  3. Share the gospel message with others, focusing on the mission of making disciples rather than speculating about future events or the specifics of God’s plans.
  4. Trust in God’s perfect timing and plans, even when they may not align with our expectations or desires.

Today Wisdom

As followers of Jesus, our focus should be on fulfilling our role as His witnesses, empowered by the Holy Spirit, rather than trying to predict the timing and specifics of His kingdom. Let us trust in His perfect plans and timing, and commit ourselves to sharing His love and salvation with those around us.
