The First and Last Lessons My Father Taught Me About Love

3 min read

The concept of love was something my father taught me early on in life. The profound influence he had on shaping my understanding of love was significant and rooted deeply in Biblical teachings. This understanding has guided me through life, teaching me to love with a heart full of compassion and kindness.

First Lesson: Unconditional Love

One of the earliest lessons I learned from my father was about the depth and breadth of unconditional love. His teachings mirrored the love God has for us, as shown in the Book of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This passage was the cornerstone of his teaching, instilling in me the idea that love should be given freely, without conditions or expectations, just as God loves us.

Journey Through Lessons

As I grew older, my father continued to impart his wisdom about love. His teachings evolved from simple, childhood understandings of love to more complex ideas as I matured. For example, he emphasized the importance of loving not just family and friends, but everyone, drawing from the Scripture Matthew 22:39, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Furthermore, he often quoted 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter, to emphasize the qualities of love – patience, kindness, truth, and endurance among others. These lessons helped me appreciate the different forms and facets of love, reinforcing the idea that love is not just an emotion, but a commitment to choose kindness and understanding over resentment or anger.

Last Lesson: Love in Suffering

Perhaps the most profound lesson I learned from my father was about finding love in suffering and difficult times. He referenced Romans 5:3-5, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” His teachings emphasized that even in trials and tribulations, love is present and powerful.

Reminder

These first and last lessons from my father have shaped my understanding and practice of love, leaving a lasting impact on my life. His teachings, grounded in scripture, highlighted the depth and breadth of love in its many forms. As I reflect on 1 John 4:19 – “We love because He first loved us”, I am reminded of my father’s teachings about love, their foundation in God’s love for us, and their guiding influence in my life. His lessons continue to remind me that love, in its purest form, is not just about feelings but about actions and decisions guided by faith, hope, and most importantly, love.
