The Price That Names You

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

If you have ever refinished a piece of furniture someone left on the curb, you know the moment. The sanding is done, the grain appears, and you realize this was walnut the whole time, hidden under three coats of paint somebody chose in a hurry. The wood was always that beautiful. It just needed someone to look long enough to see it.

Paul writes to the Corinthians with that same urgency of uncovering. “Do you not know,” he says, and the question is genuine, because they had forgotten. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. You were bought at a price. The language of purchase can feel transactional if you read it too quickly. Slow down, and it says something different: someone looked at you and decided you were worth everything. The price was not a negotiation. It was a declaration of value. Whatever you have been telling yourself about your worth, God already settled the question, and he settled it with his own son.

“You are not your own” sounds, at first, like a loss of freedom. Read it again from the angle of someone who is exhausted from managing every outcome, carrying every failure, measuring every result against their own effort. To hear that you are not your own can feel less like a cage and more like a hand on your shoulder, steady and specific: you belong somewhere. You belong to someone. The weight you have been carrying alone was never yours to carry alone.

Time to reflect

Spend a few quiet minutes with these before the noise of the day resumes:

  • Where in your life have you been acting as if your value depends entirely on your own performance?
  • What would change in your daily routine if you genuinely believed your body was a place God chose to dwell?
  • Is there a burden you keep picking back up that you have already been told is not yours to carry?
  • When someone says “you belong,” does that feel like comfort or like a demand? Why?

Prayer Of The Day

Lord, I have spent so long running my life like a project with deadlines and performance reviews that I forgot it was never entirely mine to manage. Forgive me for the mornings I woke up measuring my worth by yesterday’s results. Forgive me for treating this body, this life, as raw material for my own plans instead of recognizing it as a place you chose to live. Teach me what it means to be owned by love rather than by fear. Help me to honor you with what I do, what I eat, what I say, how I rest, and how I show up for the people around me. I want to live like someone who has been claimed, not like someone still auditioning. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

Honoring God with your body starts in the ordinary minutes nobody sees:

  1. Read Psalm 139:13-16 slowly this morning and sit with the fact that God formed your body deliberately, not accidentally.
  2. Pick one physical habit you have been neglecting, whether it is drinking enough water, stretching, or getting to bed earlier, and do it today as an act of stewardship rather than self-improvement.
  3. Walk outside for ten minutes without your phone. Let your body exist in a space without inputs or evaluations.
  4. Tell someone specific today that they matter to you. Use their name. Say it out loud, not in a text.
  5. Identify one responsibility you have been gripping too tightly, something you keep trying to control alone, and pray over it by name, releasing it once.
  6. Before your next meal, pause for five seconds. Not to say a formal grace, but simply to notice that you are being sustained.

Today Wisdom

The word “bought” sounds like commerce until you hear what was spent. Then it sounds like someone calling your name across a crowded room, certain of who they came for. You were not picked from a shelf. You were chosen before the price was counted, and the price was counted anyway.
