Today’s Devotional
In John 2:19, Jesus makes a bold statement that confuses and ultimately angers the religious leaders of His time. When asked for a sign to prove His authority, Jesus refers to the temple’s destruction and His resurrection in three days. The religious leaders, not understanding the deeper meaning behind His words, take His statement literally and scoff at the idea of rebuilding the magnificent temple in such a short period.
However, Jesus is speaking of the temple of His body, foreshadowing His death and resurrection. Through this statement, Jesus is revealing His divine nature and the ultimate purpose of His time on earth – to die for our sins and conquer death through His resurrection. This verse demonstrates the spiritual depth and prophetic nature of Jesus’ teachings, which often went beyond the comprehension of those around Him.
