Where Impossible Begins

“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.””
Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Today’s Devotional

You know the moment. The one where you stop mid-sentence in a prayer because you realize you have said the same words, asked for the same thing, and nothing has moved. The ceiling feels low. Your own effort, which once felt like faith in action, now feels like a wheel spinning in mud.

I think most of us arrive at Matthew 19:26 from that place, not from curiosity about what Jesus meant, but from exhaustion. The disciples had just watched a rich young man walk away from Jesus because the cost was too high. And their honest question was the one we ask quietly at 1 a.m.: “Who then can be saved?” If this person could not do it, what chance do we have?

Jesus looked at them. That detail matters. He did not look away, did not soften the difficulty, did not pretend the impossible was merely hard. He confirmed it: with man, this is impossible. Full stop. He let that word sit in the air before he opened the door beside it. With God, all things are possible. The impossible is not reduced. It remains impossible, on human terms. What changes is who enters the room.

This is the part we resist. Surrendering control does not feel like strength. Letting go of our plans, our timelines, our grip on how things should unfold feels like defeat. But Jesus is pointing at something the disciples almost missed: the wall you hit is not the end of the road. It is the place where a different kind of power was always meant to take over.

Time to reflect

Let the weight of that verse settle before you move on. Consider:

  • What specific situation in your life right now feels genuinely impossible, and have you told God that honestly?
  • Where have you been treating faith as effort, trying harder instead of letting go?
  • If you stopped managing the outcome for one full day, what would you be afraid might happen?
  • When was the last time you admitted to yourself that your own strength was not enough?

Prayer Of The Day

God, I have been pushing against a door that will not open on my own strength, and I am tired. I have tried to fix, to manage, to force an answer into a shape I could accept. Forgive me for believing that my effort was the only thing standing between this situation and collapse. I do not know what it looks like to let you carry what I have been white-knuckling, but I am asking you to show me. Teach me that letting go is not giving up. Meet me in the place where my resources end, because I believe that is exactly where yours begin. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Strengthening Faith

When impossible is the word on your mind, small steps of surrender become acts of faith. Try these today:

  1. Write down the one situation you have been trying to control on your own. Set the paper where you will see it, and each time you notice it, say aloud: “This belongs to you, God.”
  2. Read Philippians 4:6-7 slowly, twice. The second time, replace the general language with the specific name of your situation.
  3. Call or text someone you trust and say, honestly, “I need prayer for something I cannot fix.”
  4. Identify one action step you have been repeating out of anxiety rather than purpose. Let it go for today.
  5. Before bed, sit in silence for three minutes. Do not ask for anything. Just sit with the God who already knows.

Today Wisdom

Surrender is a strange kind of courage. It looks like weakness from the outside, the way kneeling looks like falling to someone who has never prayed. But every person who has knelt long enough knows the difference: falling ends where the ground is, and kneeling ends where God is.
